Jaffa staves

Post by Tonya » Thu Oct 06, 2011 3:39 pm

Hey propsters!

The jaffa staff is 7' (9' in the film). I have sourced someone who will make us 6 larp safe staves. Now heres the clincher. The 7' ones will be £150 each (£130 if bulk order - ttl £780) Or if we can cope with 6'6 versions they will be £130 each (£110 if bulk order - ttl £660).

We have the money in the prop budget. Do we think we can lose the 6'' in height to save £120 or will they look silly shorter? How long are the ones we have now?

I know you may think that this is a lot for props but this will be 6 lrpsafe staff weapons, which are long overdue and will compliment the new jaffa armour I am making nicely (which will be very cheap to make). I for one would like to see the society money improving our props, especially before the lrp fair in February.

Thoughts?

From a pure utility point of view, dropping to 6'6" is something I would actually prefer. A 7' stave is a lot of length for melee, 6'6" would be coming down to a more usable length, for my taste anyway.

As for looking silly: I dont think it will matter.

With sparks. Bearing in mind these are for ranged AS WELL AS melee combat 6'6" is a good length for them to be.

A lot of fantasy systems don't allow 7 footers purely on safety grounds as they can be so hard to control in hand to hand.

6'6'' it is then :)

As an addition, the lovely PurpleSue is working on some samples for me so that we can have some jaffa faux chainmaille (lighter to wear, durable and a damn site cheaper than the real thing).

Watch this space :)

If the funds are available and not needed for anything else staff weapons and Jaffa armour are pretty integral to Stargate so I would say go for it. As for size I think if they can be transported and stored go for the larger size they will be more impressive and I don’t think the extra 6inches will greatly alter there melee combat

Who have you found to make them? can we see other bits they have made, perhaps members might be interested to get there own

As above, happy with a 6'6" staff.

As for mail? Stringmaille is better than no maille, which us where we are now. Although I agree, if faux maille is not stringmaille then that's even better.

Transporting anything over 6ft or so becomes complicated. I'd be quite happy with 6'6".

I think the "Durable" comment indicates plastic mail. Am I right?
